Naturally your vintage era influence will be your driving force behind your choices and as you go along building your collection there are always staple foundations to any collection. Going out dresses or summer dresses which are vintage reinventions are excellent core additions to your collection.
When you choose carefully you will find that you are building up a classic, timeless collection. So choosing different items and being creative matching them with more modern looks or jewellery. Of course there are some pieces that are eternally in style even for those who don't see themselves as vintage lovers, these are the likes of off the shoulder items and lace up boots.
There have been lots of reinvention of haute couture vintage style dresses and shoes, even sunglasses. An iconic inspiration in this end of the vintage market is of course Jackie Onassis, or Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Considered to be the most stylish First Lady in history, she has been copied by women everywhere. Her style combined youthful grace with ladylike formality, which was made easier for her as she was born into high society New York, had a bluebood type upbringing and a huge admiration for French couture.
Some of Jackie's favourite items were shift dresses, pearls, white gloves, pea coats with big buttons worn with matching pill box hats. For an evening outing, she loved to wear magnificent floor-length gowns mostly by Valentino or Givenchy, which she wore with elegant elbow length gloves. She relied a lot also on American designer Oleg Cassini who designed about 300 outfits for her.
Out and about you could see her wearing oversized sunglasses which are glamorous and wealthy. What helped Onassis look elegant consistently was her excellent posture which is something that can be practiced by anyone. She also chose her materials and colour matches wisely. She loved her strands of pearls, whether they were real or not!
Nowadays you have the big advantage of being able to research all the styles available, to see what people are recommending and what not, to spend time in the comfort of our own homes creating our new wardrobes and looks. Jackie O did not have this advantage but you have, so imagine how great you can look!
